Also known as cryopreservation, this technique involves freezing and storing fertilised eggs for later use. Embryos can be frozen at different stages of development, including the single cell stage, the two to eight cell stage, or the blastocyst stage. The embryos are put into a solution with cryoprotectants to protect them from damage caused by ice crystals. They are then frozen, usually by vitrification (fast freezing), and stored in liquid nitrogen tanks.
Sperm can be frozen for a number of reasons, including storage of donated sperm, to provide a backup sample for couples undergoing infertility treatment, and to store sperms before undergoing cancer treatment.
In this technique, embryos are created using IVF or ICSI and then frozen instead of transferred during the “fresh” cycle. The embryos are thawed and transferred to the patient’s womb a few months later as part of a frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycle.
